Sunday
School is an integral part in the faith formation of our children. We strive to
have a Sunday School program that is enjoyed and relevant to our Sunday School
families. Each Sunday morning at 9:45, from September to May, we gather together
to sing, praise and learn about God while getting to know each other and having
fun.
This is a program for children in Grades 4 through 6, which takes
place once a month (Saturday or Sunday afternoon) during the school year
(Sept-June). We believe that many connections and friendships are made at this
age, and we have the hope that these relationships will continue through youth
group and into all aspects of the congregation. We hope to achieve this through
devotions, stories, discussions and fun. We focus on the seasons of the church,
Christmas and Easter, as well as on relationship-building through acceptance,
tolerance, recognizing our differences and similarities. Some of our activities
include games, a Halloween Party, Pizza and a movie, a Christmas Party, Skating
and Tobogganing, an Easter Egg Hunt, etc. Friends are always welcome.
Our Youth Group is for Grades 7 and up. We focus on building
relationships with each other, with ourselves and with God. We use the cross as
our guide with arms reaching out to others, towards ourselves, and up towards
God. The Youth Group runs approx. two to three events per month. Once a month
during the school year, on the third Sunday evening of the month, we travel to
the Prairie Fire youth service. Every two years we attend National Youth
Gatherings. We see these gatherings as two year commitments from the youth/
leaders, building relationships and community, raising funds and awareness. We
also raise funds for the current National Youth Projects. Some of our events
include a Sleigh Ride with MNO youth, Corn Maze, Craft Nights, Pizza and a
Movie, Bowling, Community Garbage Clean-up, etc. We work on finding the
strengths of our young people and finding different ways for them to be involved
in all aspects of the church. Our goal for Youth Group is to be a place where
youth can build relationships and friendships with each other, and with God. We
have hope and faith that they will use their gifts as they continue to grow in
the community of God’s family. Watch the Events
Calendar for up-coming events.

Youth
Class
From September to May, the young people gather on Sunday
mornings at 9:45 in the youth room at the church to have some bible study and
discussions. On the last Sunday of each month, the group will go for
“coffee” at the nearest Tim Horton’s and return in time for the worship service.
The Confirmation program at Sherwood
Park Lutheran Church uses a "longer and later" approach to educating the youth
about their relationship with Jesus Christ, and also the relationships those
youth have with others. Youth begin the Confirmation program in Grade 4 and
finish with their Affirmation of Baptism in Grade 11. They attend weekly
sessions for approximately 10 weeks each year, plus other retreat sessions.
Annually during the school summer holidays, a children's Vacation
Bible School (VBS) program is held, usually sometime during the last half of
August. The theme of the program changes each year and various themes have been
introduced over the last few programs, such as a Rain Forest Adventure. The
program includes bible stories, music, art, games, drama and more. Children from
the congregation and surrounding community of Sherwood Park Lutheran Church are
invited to attend. The program is always a success for the kids attending, and
others volunteering to run it can get as much out of the program as the
children. Watch the Events Calendar for the next
upcoming VBS program.
This group of women are a Christ-centred
community committed to nurturing their faith and spiritual strength to
enable them to be people of God in mission. These women in Lutheran
churches across Canada value gathering, biblical reflection and reaching out to
others in meaningful ways. The women of Sherwood Park Lutheran Church are part
of this national body of women through national conventions, activities and
campaigns. The ELW of Sherwood Park meet throughout the year and activities will
be listed on the website or in the monthly Messenger.
On a monthly basis, men gather from the
congregation and community to "chew the fat". The group makes a superb Saturday
morning breakfast and enjoys it with conversation and good times. The Men’s
Breakfast occurs throughout the year on Saturday mornings at 8:30 and dates will
be listed on the website or in the monthly Messenger.
The Daytimers' Worship service was
developed as an outreach to the community in and surrounding Sherwood Park
Lutheran Church in East Kildonan in September 2007.
Sherwood Park recognizes
that as people change, so does the need for increased
socialization - for anyone who happens to be at home during the day, whether seniors, stay-at-home moms or dads, ability challenged, loneliness can be an issue. As an individual is faced with the challenges of life, and perhaps without their significant other or close friends and
other family members, often there is a greater sense of spiritual awareness
and the search for truth and meaning. Daytimers' Worship is an opportunity for
people of all Christian denominations and ages to come together midweek to worship God
and connect with other people in a friendly environment.
This monthly
worship service is held on the third Thursday of each month at 1:00 pm
and follows a traditional service format. Familiar hymns are led by a song
leader and Holy Communion is offered at each service. After the 45 minute
service, a Coffee Fellowship takes place in the church basement.
The next
Daytimers' Worship service will be held on September 16, 2010.
We look forward to meeting you and worshiping with
you! You are welcome to bring a friend (or two)! If you require a ride to
church, please contact the Church Office at 661-3947. Sherwood Park is
wheelchair accessible and has an elevator to assist those who have difficulty
with stairs.
