An Excerpt from Pastor Lurvey’s Sermon of August 29, 2010:
GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER?
Luke 14:1,7-14
“Come, Lord Jesus, be our guest….”
That’s part of a prayer our family often uses at meal times.
Every time we have the Lord’s Supper in church we pray that Jesus will be present with us.
Come, Lord Jesus, be our guest.
Is this wise? Do we really want Jesus to come to dinner?
I ask because of today’s Gospel. Let’s face it Jesus was not always the most pleasant of dinner guests.
Here Jesus has been invited to the house of a Pharisee.
That’s a surprising thing, considering that Jesus has been attacked consistently by the Pharisees,
and he’s given as good as he’s got. Maybe this Pharisee was hoping for some kind of reconciliation.
“If I can just get Jesus to sit down at the dinner table, in the warmth of my home,
maybe we can work things out.”
